AI Ecosystems Beat AI Assistants

An assistant helps with a task. An ecosystem supports a pattern of work.

A hand-illustrated architecture map of cooperating household AI agents — an ecosystem, not an assistant

I think the shift in AI is from assistant to ecosystem.

An assistant helps with a task.

An ecosystem supports a pattern of work.

That is a very different thing.

An ecosystem has:

  • Roles
  • Handoffs
  • Review points
  • Memory
  • Escalation paths
  • Operating rhythms
  • Evidence capture

This is where AI starts becoming infrastructure.

But only if we design it.

Otherwise, we just end up with several disconnected tools producing several disconnected outputs while everyone calls it transformation and quietly keeps using spreadsheets.

The next step is not simply more or better AI.

It is better relationships between AI functions.
